The reports continue to confuse but...

Hello again,

The newspaper reports continue to confuse over the power situation for mumbai - on the one hand extra power will be made available very soon, on the other the situation will revert to crisis-condition in the not-to-distant future.

Again the best course of action for us mumbaikars is to take remedial action now when remedial action can be planned and implemented most efficiently.

One on-going suggestion is for large groups like housing societies, schools, colleges, hospitals etc to implement energy-saving devices in open places where lighting is not so crucial.

These days the best way to approach problems is by going the green way. Whatever solution is opted for should be environmentally safe and sustainable. Where outdoor lighting is concerned a green way to go is by opting for solar lanterns. At about Rs3000 to Rs9000 these are affordable by most housing societies, hospitals etc. A few placed in open positions will ensure enough lighting during night-time and the electricity thus saved will be far more valuable than whatever promises the electric companies or power ministry's have to offer.

Moreover, not only do these lanterns have an immediate pay-back period, they increase their financial worth as time goes by for electric rates will only go upwards.

Another Idea for saving power before it hurts...

Before posting this other idea, let's just continue with the last one.

Congregating in one room may not be difficult but getting a conversation going could quite possible be. A possible way out could be by muting the t.v. during commercials and diverting that silence to topics of common interest. By adding some innovative content active participation will soon be possible. Choose known topics, something in the news, something that could affect the future of the kids, holiday plans, etc.

Soon the t.v. will loose quite a lot of it's importance.

A new idea is to get groups bigger than individual families to start saving electricity. How about housing societies as a whole taking group decisions to reduce common lighting (of course without compromising security)

Another option is to get all the hundreds of thousands of small retail shops that have lighted fronts and/or neon signboards to switch off after say 10pm or 11pm. Many are closed by then but keep their shop fronts lit up.

Your Ideas ?

Opportunity Is Permanently Available - Take Action

Hi fellow mumbaikars,

During the last few days all newspapers have focussed on the impending power shortage mumbai could definitely face.

As is usual, these power cuts will come during the hottest periods and wow will temperatures rise?

As is also usual, if you track a few newspapers over a few days all dramatic stories get contradicted leaving us in the dark - so to speak - as to the actual state of affairs.

I believe all situations offer OPPORTUNITY and here is the opportunity for any mumbaikar to help the city regardless of what the papers say.

Every one knows some way or the other by which we could save electricity. If we log on here and share our ideas with the rest of mumbai we could very well make a valid contribution in staving off acute power cuts.

What say Mumbai - let's see some ingenuity!

To Get Started here's one suggestion:

As far as possible family members should gather in one room most of the time. This room could have the a.c., fan, t.v., computer, etc. This could cause disagreements regarding which channel to watch etc so another opportunity presents itself. Older family members could subtly introduce a discussion that involves all members and soon the t.v., computer, etc would not feel so very necessary.

I tell you this for I have done it and it works!
